It’s easier to rate artists by recognizable numbers than in terms of the quality of work.

We love applying this to others’ work and hate the thought of anyone applying it to our own work.

We want to be judged on the work, not judged on how other people are judging it.

For The Win

In sports everyone knows that when there’s three seconds left and the score is tied, the next play is for the win. All the pressure and stress and glory and legacy are all wrapped up in the next play for the win. This is the one that matters more than all the others and will forever change the story.

But for the rest of us we hardly ever know when we’re playing for the win. 

We have to be ok with the alternative…making the next play a good one. Sure it might turn out to be for the win but we won’t know until months or years down the road. 

Make it good enough to be a winner even if it isn’t for the win.

Prepare like you know what might happen but go into it knowing you don’t know what’s going to happen.

Doing the first part but forgetting the second leads to your arrogance and anxiousness being just around the corner you don’t see coming.

Probably not.

It’s ok for you to charge (lots of) money for the thing you’re good at too.

Antique Store Wandering

Great songs and great art don’t happen by wandering around in darkness and then finally lightning strikes. It’s not that dramatic.

It’s more like walking around an antique store during the day. Everything is fully lit with plenty of bad lighting. The rows are completely unorganized. It takes forever and everything’s been used. Just lots of things to look at and you having to make decisions about what’s worth buying and displaying.
