Feedback

If you’re asking for feedback but actually want encouragement, you’ll probably end up disappointed.

»» If you want encouragement, it’s ok to ask for it.

»» And at the same time…receiving constructive feedback from trusted sources is perhaps some of the best encouragement…it’s people you respect using their time make your thing better. Pretty encouraging.

Tetris

I play one game of Tetris every day.

Something I’ve learned…the exact piece I really need might be the very next one.

The best case scenario is in the realm of possibilities.

So many of us planners plan for worst case or less than optimal scenarios. And that’s a good thing. But since we’ve spent so much time and effort planning for the bad scenarios, we want to be rewarded for our work…so there’s a part of us that resists the best case scenario when it arises because it doesn’t validate our effort in planning for all the other possibilities.

We have to be willing to let go of our worst-case-planning when the best case (seemingly) falls from the sky.

Politician And Artist Swap

Politicians are very good at not answering the question, and instead turning every question into whatever they want. Very entertaining.

Artists are very good at sticking to the question, never veering far from the the actual answer…as mundane as it may be. Very informative.

It should be the other way around.

Fun And Efficiency

It isn’t often efficient but it’s essential. It’s more important than efficiency. But both take practice. You probably know which one you need more practice with.

A few weeks ago I unearthed a two hour home video of my first band making our first record. In high school. In my bedroom. Terrible gear. Huge expectations.

It was crystal clear who was good at having a good time and who was trying to be a little too efficient at sixteen years old. :)

Thoughts And Actions

If you’re not going to do something about it, stop thinking about it.

If you’re not going to put action behind the things you spend a lot of time thinking about, it’s worth thinking of something else. Something that you’re going to move from thoughts into actions.

Your time and your thoughts are precious and powerful so it’s important to spend them in ways that make a difference to yourself and to others.

Quiet Punchlines

Whether you’re a comedian or a musician (especially a bass player), a whole new world opens up when you realize how powerful a quiet punchline can be. The moments of no talking, or no playing can be what makes the whole thing explode.
